Competition is intense in the Coal Mining industry, as some U.S. mines approach the end of their useful life, while other coal-producing countries step up production and win a growing share of traditional U.S. export markets. The supply/demand balance creates volatile pricing, although high quality, low sulfur coals always attract a premium price. Deregulation of the electricity industry will put pressure on coal prices, while international pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have only a limited effect on coal output.

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following: mining bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite by underground mining, auger mining, strip mining, culm bank mining, and other surface mining; developing coal mine sites; and beneficiating (i.e, preparing) coal (e.g., cleaning, washing, screening, and sizing coal).
