Highlights

Eskom Holdings (Eskom) generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to industrial, mining, commercial, agricultural, and residential customers and redistributors. It recorded revenues of ZAR40,068 million (approximately $5,735 million) during the fiscal year ended March 2007, an increase of 11.1% over 2006. Eskom's total nominal generation capacity for the period ending March 2007 was 42,618 megawatts (MW), while total net maximum generation capacity was 37,761 MW. As on March 31, 2007, 88% of Eskom's generating mix was coal-fired. Eskom's strength lies in its strong market position in South Africa, which adds to its competitive advantage in the domestic electricity market. Eskom operates in the wholesale energy, power generation, utilities networks, and utilities retail/wholesale components of the energy value chain. Growing popularity of renewable energy provides an opportunity for Eskom to exploit this segment. The renewable energy strategy aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Eskom's energy mix.
