Summary
South Africa is Africa's largest energy producer and consumer. Investments in the energy industries - such as coal mines, power stations and oil refineries - represent a large demand on available investment capital which is in short supply. Recently, shortfalls in the adequate supply of electricity, gas and fuel have been reported. To this effect, the government, Eskom (parastatal electric power company) and Transnet (the company behind South African national transport businesses, including ports, Petronet, Metrorail, Transtel, and South African Airways) are planning major new investments - which have become imperative, particularly ahead of the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup preparations.
The report provides an overview of the South African energy sector with highlights and analysis of market and investment trends in the South African sub-sector energy industries, namely: the South African coal; oil; gas; renewable energy; nuclear energy as well as hydropower energy industries.
Furthermore, the report highlights the nature and extent of regulation in the sector and scrutinises underlying country and political risks when investing in South Africa - which amongst others, may include: taxation discriminations; equity restrictions; operations restrictions; repatriation restrictions; exchanges controls and unfavourable labour policies.
