Summary
US demand to reach $24 billion in 2013
US demand for electric transmission and distribution equipment is expected to grow 2.5 percent annually to $24 billion in 2013. Growth will be supported by continued growth in electricity demand and the rising use of renewable energy sources, many of which will require significant investment in the electric grid to enable these remote generators to deliver power to consumers.
In addition, investments to modernize and upgrade the US electric grid -- including technologically advanced systems that are part of the so-called "smart grid" -- will support demand for many types of electric transmission and distribution equipment. The maturation of deregulation efforts and regulatory changes designed to ensure returns on investment in the electric grid will also support demand from electric utilities.
Moderating prices for many types of electric transmission and distribution equipment, following sharp raw material price increases starting around 2005, will prevent even more rapid growth. In addition, slower growth in nonresidential construction and capital spending will limit gains.
Electric utilities, industrial sectors to remain dominant
By their very nature, the largest and most traditional markets for electric transmission and distribution equipment are the electric utilities and industrial sectors. In 2008, electric utilities accounted for nearly half of total demand, with the industrial sector -- including nonutility generators -- accounting for an additional third. Growth in these markets will be supported by increasing electricity generation by independent power producers and cogenerators, combined with continued, albeit slowing, capital spending by utilities and regulatory changes designed to ensure returns on investment in the electric grid. The ongoing deregulation of the electric power industry will continue to shift demand from utilities to industrial firms and nonutility generators The smaller government and institutional market will register the fastest increases through 2013, with gains supported by growth in transportation construction spending and government fixed investment.
Both the commercial and residential markets will see below average increases, with particularly weak prospects in the commercial market due to modest gains in commercial construction. Still, the continuing penetration of consumer electronics and electric transmission and distribution product innovations will provide opportunities in these applications.
The best opportunities will be in meters and power switching equipment. Demand for meters will grow 4.8 percent annually, benefitting from the growing demand for more advanced and expensive "smart meters" that provide customers with pricing signals and thereby help limit demand. These smart meters form an important part of the developing smart grid. Demand for power switching equipment will rise five percent annually through 2013, supported by the trend toward automated and remote controlled equipment among electric utilities and by strong growth in substation construction to serve remote wind farms and other renewable energy sources.
US shipments of electric transmission and distribution equipment are expected to advance 1.5 percent annually, trailing demand. Foreign trade plays an important role in the industry, with the US running a sizeable trade deficit.
