This Energy Insights Perspective provides an update to earlier analyses of smart metering meter data management (MDM) trends. Energy Insights examines the key smart metering drivers for MDM, three approaches to the technology, and the vendor landscape. This Perspective also provides guidance for utilities about how to make the most of MDM installations.

2007 has seen additional emphasis on the importance of MDM as more utilities start on the smart metering path. Although a lot of activity is still focused on pilots, other utilities are proceeding with full implementations of MDM systems, and early adopters are using MDM. Whether or not a utility has embarked on this path, it must consider when and how to implement an MDM to match its technical and information architectures, as well as its current and planned applications and process improvements.
