Through its two principal subsidiaries, Consumers Energy and CMS Enterprises, CMS is engaged in independent power production, providing natural gas and electricity, and natural gas transmission. CMS generates power from four fossil fuel generating plants, 13 hydroelectric plants, a pumped storage generating plant, and several combustion-turbine plants. The company's principal subsidiary, Consumers Energy, has a total owned electricity generation capacity of 5,674 MW and generated 23,916 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during 2006.
