This Energy Insights document looks at trends and challenges faced by different types of service providers in the exploration industry. The consensus among attendees at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' (SEG's) Houston 2005 event was that the availability of hydrocarbons is not an issue and that the daily global demand can be met through collaborative geopolitics and risk sharing between nations, multinational oil and gas companies, and international service providers, and by leveraging technology to optimize reservoir recovery and overall company operating efficiencies. IT vendors in the exploration industry must strive for a price-performance equilibrium wherein they can sustain their own profitability while adding significant additional business value to oil and gas companies in a cost-effective manner.
