Summary
Italy's mass grocery retailers welcomed a move by the government in July, which authorises the sale of non-prescription medicines through mass grocery retail outlets. Previously, the products were only allowed to be sold via authorised chemists' stores. Coop Italia was the first retailer to introduce in-store counters for OTC medicines in August, and further operators can be expected to follow.
Otherwise, the Italian mass grocery retail sector continues to be characterised by operators' expansion of their store networks into regions of the country so far characterised by a lower store density. Similar to other Western European markets, the discount channel is becoming more popular in Italy, and this overall trend is analysed in more depth in BMI's new regional overview of the Western European discount retail sector.
The extension of BMI's industry forecasts to 201 0during Q206 did place emphasis on the strong growth in the soft drinks sector, driven by a high rate of product innovation. BMI outlined how the strength of the bottled water industry in Italy will assist value sales growth over the forecast period. This quarter, BMI has added a regional overview of Western Europe's bottled water industry, which serves to illuminate the fastest growing non-alcoholic drinks sub-sector.
