Industry Hits Turbulence

The industry has recovered from substantial declines in revenue in the early 2000s due to terrorist attacks, hampering the civil segment. Meanwhile, funding increased substantially for the military segment post September 11 attacks. By 2005, passenger levels had returned to pre September 11 attack levels, prompting strong demand for industry products in the civil segment, while the government will ease defense spending over the outlook period.

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following: (1) manufacturing complete aircraft; (2) manufacturing aircraft engines, propulsion units, auxiliary equipment or parts; (3) developing and making prototypes of aircraft; (4) aircraft conversions (i.e., major modification to systems); and (5) complete aircraft overhaul and rebuilding (i.e., periodic restoration of aircraft to original design specifications).
