Germany has the largest organic meat products market in Europe however sales are projected to fall by 24 percent in 2002 due to the Nitrofen scandal.

The banned pesticide Nitrofen was found to be fed to organic poultry at German farms and this led to sales of organic meat products to fall drastically in the middle of the year. Hundreds of thousands of organic chickens were slaughtered in June 2002 as retailers cleared their store shelves of organic poultry meat and organic eggs. Although consumer confidence in organic foods was returning in the latter part of the year, some supermarkets had withdrawn organic meat products indefinitely.
