The West Europe cooler market is a dynamic Euro 903 million industry. A 16.5% climb in the POU market more than offset the 2.6% decline in bottled cooler unit placements, bringing 3% combined growth to the total installed base of bottled and POU coolers in 2008.

Also known as mains-fed coolers, POU is an ongoing challenge to the bottled water cooler industry, with POU operators strongly promoting the demonstrable costs savings, hygiene and environmental benefits, acting to drive the industry forward. For 2008, the UK and Italy remained the largest POU markets in West Europe, with Greece, Germany, Spain and Switzerland experiencing the greatest increases.

Particularly notable across Northern Europe, the more mature bottled cooler market has witnessed a slowdown in recent years. In 2008, the fall was compounded by a combination of poor summer weather, the impact of the global economic crisis, scrutiny of its environmental credentials and misleading media reports surrounding cooler hygiene issues. Given their relative youthfulness, the markets of Southern Europe generally reported much higher growth rates during 2008, with Greece the star performer, seeing unit growth in excess of 10% from 2007.
