Summary

This Key Note Market Report analyses the UK market for bricks and tiles, which, in 2007, was estimated to be worth 2.06bn, having risen by 4.7% on the previous year.

The products covered in this report fall into two broad categories: clay bricks and tiles; and concrete bricks, blocks and tiles. For clay bricks and tiles, housebuilding is the main market, but there are also applications where attractive features are required in other types of building, such as commercial, retail and public premises. Concrete bricks, blocks and tiles are also used in housebuilding, but they are used more generally in the construction market. Concrete bricks and blocks have an important use in landscaping and gardening. In terms of turnover, the concrete bricks, blocks and tiles sector is considerably larger than the clay bricks and tiles sector.

The products covered in this report are highly dependent on housebuilding and there are changes in this market that affect the demand for bricks and tiles. There is a trend towards building flats, which is an important market for concrete blocks and bricks. As a result of intense pressure to reduce building costs, alternative, fast-track construction methods are now being used in which factory-made housing modules are assembled on site. Further developments in this direction would erode some of the bricks and tiles market.

As far as industry structure is concerned, the UK bricks and tiles industry is now mostly owned by European companies. Wienerberger AG, a leading international brick manufacturer, recently bought Baggeridge Brick, the largest of the remaining independent brick companies, and Hanson PLC has been sold to HeildelbergCement. Ibstock Brick Ltd is owned by CRH PLC of the Republic of Ireland and Marley Eternit is part of Etex of Belgium.

The future of the UK bricks and tiles market remains heavily dependent on the housing market, which, at present, is beset by uncertainties in the financial sector. Difficulties in the US subprime sector (homeowners being unable to maintain their mortgage payments) have led to similar problems in the UK and other housing markets. In the UK, a credit squeeze is limiting the amount and type of lending by financial institutions. In the longer term, there are plans for major housebuilding programmes to alleviate the shortage of homes in the UK, but present financial problems could delay these plans. Nevertheless, other major projects are planned (e.g. the London Olympics in 2012) that will make use of bricks, blocks and related products.

Future challenges for the bricks and tiles industry will include rising energy prices, the environmental impact of the industry, product re-use and recycling, sustainability of resources and life-time performance of bricks and tiles. Bricks and tiles will increasingly be assessed in terms of their performance in relation to changing weather conditions, e.g. warmer temperatures, high winds and floods.
