Summary

US demand to grow 2.8% annually through 2012 US demand for windows and doors is forecast to rise 2.8 percent annually to $40 billion in 2012. Advances will be driven by the increasingly popularity of plastic windows and doors.

Demand gains for plastic products will be led by the low cost of plastic windows and doors compared to wood and metal products, as well as the increasing recognition of the superior performance properties of windows and doors made from materials such as vinyl and fiberglass. Plastic windows and doors are highly durable materials that are resistant to rotting and corrosion, and offer enhanced protection against heat loss and other factors that reduce the energy efficiency of a home.

Wood windows and doors to remain dominant Wood windows and doors will continue to account for the largest share of overall window and door demand, totaling 42 percent of demand in 2007. Through 2012, however, demand for wood products will advance at a belowaverage pace, primarily due to the high cost of wood products compared to less expensive plastic items. Wood windows and doors, however, will continue to remain the market leader through 2012. Wood products are increasingly seen as highend products that increase the value of a structure in which they are installed.

Wood windows and doors are predominantly used in residential construction applications, especially among middleincome and more affluent homeowners. The residential market accounted for 74 percent of total US window and door demand in 2007. The fact that this market has a high degree of interest in selecting products that are aesthetically pleasing leads to the use of highercost products such as wood windows and doors.

Moreover, increasing interest in products that enhance the security and energy efficiency of homes has led homeowners to desire windows and doors with interior reinforcements, cladding or internal insulation, and other features that drive up the initial cost of the door or window. Demand for windows and doors in nonresidential construction applications will be fueled by continued strong spending on nonresidential construction, especially in the office and commercial, and institutional markets, which offer significant growth prospects for windows and doors.

Metal products dominate the nonresidential market, as the durability and minimal maintenance requirements of metal compared to wood or plastic make it ideal for structures that must withstand a good deal of wear and tear. Further advances will be led by increasing interest in windows and doors with enhanced safety and energy efficiency features..
