Summary

European Union Directives and Migration of Industries to Central and Eastern Europe Propel Opportunities in Water and Wastewater Treatment

The CEE industrial water and wastewater treatment market is entering a vibrant growth phase. Market growth is mainly triggered by the need to comply with the European Union (EU) directives related to industrial wastewater treatment due to the entry of member states into the EU as well as increased foreign direct investments in both the new EU member states and the rest of the CEE countries. This is a key driver for demand of high-quality water. "The wastewater treatment market is relatively more developed than the water treatment market, with opportunities in the secondary, tertiary and sludge technologies," says the analyst of this research. "The classification of sensitive regions as well as obligations to meet the environmental targets in the Danube River will continue to drive the specialised wastewater and sludge treatment sectors." On the one hand, CEE is a key regional market in the global water market with a high potential, translating into a range of opportunities spread over the next decade. Regulatory compliance with EU directives such as integrated pollution prevention and control directive (IPPC) is currently a priority for industries in the region, with opportunities particularly for secondary and tertiary treatment systems. On the other hand, the rapid industrial growth in the region is creating significant demand for water treatment technologies to quench the increasing thirst for high-purity water in the industrial sector. The wastewater treatment market segment shows promising signs of growth in the CEE industrial market due to the EU directives, regional environmental agreements and national legislation. Another external factor that could influence the increased demand in wastewater treatment is the rising prices of water and wastewater discharge tariffs. Entry barriers in the CEE region are relatively high due to strongly established local and regional suppliers. Customers have shown greater willingness to work with well-recognised local participants rather than external suppliers, as local suppliers understand the localised needs of the environment better. Moreover, local suppliers have the advantage of proximity, crucial to maintaining strong business ties and developing new affiliations with customers. "The development of partnerships, joint ventures or alliances with reputable local partners is critical to building a strong presence in the CEE industrial market both for new entrants and as well as existing foreign firms," concludes the analyst. "Involvement with local firms will help in navigating around formal and informal procedures as well as in establishing recognition among local industries."
