Summary
Demand for Energy-efficient Lighting to Boost Revenue Prospects for South African Lighting Equipment Market
The lighting industry has developed significantly over the last decade. Lighting companies have made efforts to supply energy-efficient technologies to mitigate the energy crisis and promote green building practices. Buildings are estimated to consume approximately 35.0 per cent of generated electricity and about 10.0 per cent of this is through lighting. Energy and environmental management trends have encouraged market participants to devise energy efficient technologies to mitigate the impact of electricity shortages, notes the analyst of this research. There has been a significant boost to the lighting industry through the increased uptake of energy efficient lamps such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). The initial cost of manufacturing advanced lighting technologies is very high. As a result, there is a trade-off between the cost of manufacturing products and potential energy savings they provide. As LEDs begin to enter the market, companies are making sizeable investments towards the R&D of LEDs. Although prices have come down in recent years, advanced lighting products are still beyond the reach of many end-users in the market, explains the analyst. Most end users are being restricted from using advanced lighting technologies because of the high capital cost requirement. Technological innovation is mostly linked with better functions and operational improvements. Enhanced technologies result in the availability of more advanced features, making the products more attractive to end-users. The new lamp technologies usually promise improved lamp performance and higher energy-savings potential. Manufacturers are investing large amounts of money into the R&D of more energy-efficient lamps. As a result, there has been an increase in the efficiency of lamps as well as in the product range, thereby driving the demand for lighting technologies.Market Sectors
