Summary
China's ship completions rank third in the past 10 consecutively years and the shipbuilding capacity also increased from 3.462 million DWT of 2002 to 12 million DWT of 2005. According to ResearchInChina, from 2006 to 2010, the total demand of ships will reach 31 million DWT, and the annual demand will be 6.2 million DWT on average.
In 2005, the cumulative sales revenue of China's shipbuilding industry amounted to RMB 110.85 billion, up by 42.6% over the year of 2004, and the profits amounted to RMB 4.29 billion, far more than that of 2004, which was RMB 1.64 billion. The export is also promising and the earnings broke through USD 4 billion in 2005.
The boom of China's shipbuilding industry is closely linked with the development of marine industry. Although the global marine market declined in 2005, new opportunities still emerged for China's shipbuilding industry. As the world's shipbuilding center shifting to China gradually and the favourable industrial policies issued by the government, China will hopefully develop to be the largest shipbuilding country in the next 10 years.
As we all know, opportunities and challenges coexist. International ship price has declined since the second half of 2005, and competitions among shipbuilding manufacturers are becoming more and more intense. In addition, raw material cost, RMB appreciation and exchange rate fluctuation are all key factors for manufacturers. How to handle these challenges is a big problem for China's shipbuilding industry. Besides, as an investment rush appears in China's shipbuilding industry and heats up day by day, shipyards that are being built, will be built and planned to be built have reached 40 million DWT, covering 80% of the total global demand. Therefore, China's shipbuilding industry must alter the growth mode and control the shipbuilding capacities. So, from this angle, the investment risks in shipbuilding industry will be high in China.
Meanwhile, ship equipment industry is another bottleneck for the future development of China's shipbuilding industry. So, for China's shipbuilding manufacturers, they should enhance technical communications and co-operations, improve localized equipment productions, introduce foreign capitals, optimize innovation mechanism and strengthen research and development etc.
