The Global Market for Metals, Precious Metals, and Recycled Metals

Publication Date February 2009
Publisher BCC Research
Product Type Report
Pages 157
ISBN Number not applicable
Product Code BCC00280

Summary

Growing global demand for metals has led to increasing scarcity and higher costs. While the 2008 global economic downturn created price drops and slackened demand for metals, the market is expected to stabilize and rebound after 2010. Lower demand has affected production levels of all metals except secondary/scrap metal, which is readily available, and generally

cheaper to produce. Secondary metal is now a major source of metal feedstock, and secondary metal value is estimated to be a quarter of the entire global market for metals production.

This BCC Research report offers a comprehensive picture of trends in the metals industry through 2008, and makes market projections through the end of 2013. It covers the end-user segments of building and construction, consumer products and electronics, industrial and electrical, jewelry, packaging, transportation and others.

The report analyzes the interaction of market dynamics, industry regulations and developing technologies. It provides an overview of growing international markets in both developed and emerging economies with attention to the effects of globalization.

The environmental impact of mining operations and pollution control efforts are discussed. Mining operations, extraction methods and recycling technologies are also examined, with respect to the fluctuations of commodity prices and supply and demand factors.

The scope of this report is broad and includes:

  • Descriptions of ferrous, non-ferrous, precious and secondary metals
  • The current global market status for metals, with trends and forecasts for growth through 2013
  • Analysis of key drivers and constraints that will shape the market for metal applications
  • Developments in pollution control technology for mining and production that are cost-effective
  • Company profiles.

Report Highlights:

  • The global market for secondary and mined metal was worth $715.0 billion in 2007 and $649.4 billion in 2008. This should reach $894.2 billion in 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6%.
  • The transportation end-user segment has the largest share of the market, worth $140.7 billion in 2008. This should reach $176.5 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 4.6%.
  • Building and construction applications have the second largest market share, generating $115.5 billion in 2008. This should increase at a CAGR of 5.8% to reach $153.4 billion in 2013.
