Metal Recycling UK Market Report 2013

This Key Note Market Update examines the UK market for metal recycling, focusing on the ferrous and non-ferrous metal segments. In 2011, the UK metal recycling market is estimated to have grown by 4.5% in terms of volume, and by 9.2% in terms of value.

For the purpose of this report, the ferrous metal sector largely concerns iron and steel, while the non-ferrous metal segment covers six metals: aluminium, copper, tin, lead, zinc and nickel. The report also briefly examines precious metals, such as gold, silver and platinum group metals (PGMs).

The global financial downturn and the national economic recession had a huge impact on the metal recycling industry, resulting in a significant fall in demand for secondary materials across the globe, alongside massive reductions in prices across metal grades, with the global market struggling to cope with overcapacity. In 2010 and 2011, the UK market has exhibited a robust recovery, with the demand for scrap metal increasing among domestic manufacturers, alongside strong growth in major export markets, particularly in the developing economies.

As metal prices have increased in recent years, with the exception of 2009, metal theft has increasingly become a problem across the UK, with reports of significant volumes of metal being stolen from railways and church roofs, for instance, to then be traded as scrap. In order to curb this problem, the UK Government has recently introduced a ban on cash payments for scrap metal. This, however, has a number of industry stakeholders worried, owing to certain traders, such as motor vehicle salvage operators, being exempt from the ban, alongside the difficulties faced by many small traders in attempting to implement the new regulations.

While the industry proved robust following the impact of the recession, the future of the metal recycling industry remains uncertain, with economic conditions weakening again in 2012; metal prices falling; and consumption across Europe declining. However, with an ever increasing focus on recycling and reuse in the UK, alongside continued demand for scrap metal from developing nations, Key Note predicts that the UK metal recycling market will continue to grow, although at relatively subdued rate. Between 2012 and 2016, Key Note forecasts that the UK market for consumption of scrap metals will increase by 11.6% and 15.7% in terms of volume and value, respectively.
