China Shipbuilding Industry Report, 2006-2007

China's Shipbuilding industry developed rapidly during the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2000-2005) with an average annual growth rate of 29%. In 2006, China's shipbuilding output reached 14.52 million deadweight tons, which accounted for 19% in global shipbuilding market and ranked third of the world for 12 consecutive years; China's newly-received ship orders 42.51 million deadweight tons, sharing 30% of the global market and ranked second of the world; ship orders in hand reached 68.72 million deadweight tons, taking 24% of the global market.

In 2006, China's shipbuilding industry accumulatively achieved sales revenue RMB 150,795 million, up by 30.7% year-on-year. Also, the shipbuilding industry made a profit of approximately RMB10 billion as a whole, which was more than the gross profits of that during the 10th Five-Year Plan period, setting a record high.

According to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, by 2010, China's shipbuilding capability will reach 40 million deadweight tons. However, as the characteristics of huge investment and long cycle of shipbuilding industry, plus the not so good periodical climate of shipping industry, the shipbuilding industry investment is at a relatively higher risk in the forthcoming years.

Suggestions on Accelerating the Development of Shipbuilding Supplemental Industry, which issued by Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense, brought forward six measures regarding improving the proportion of loaded containers against total capacity of vessel or allocation with localized equipments and set the general objective of this proportion reaching 70% by the year of 2010. The measures and objectives are ready to resolve the problem that hampers the development of China's shipbuilding industry.

The data of this report are mainly from National Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Information Industry, Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense, China Shipbuilding Association and State Information and Data Research Centre, etc. The report not only analyses the status quo and the future supply and demand situation of the shipbuilding industry both at China and abroad, but also summarizes the production and economic situation, competitiveness and development trends of China's leading ship builders. The report concludes with strategic suggestions on the development of China shipbuilding industry in the near future.
