Summary
US demand to exceed $16 billion in 2011
Converted flexible packaging demand in the US is forecast to exceed $16 billion in 2011. Growth will be attributable to cost, performance and source reduction advantages over most rigid packaging formats. Moreover, heightened barrier requirements in many markets will drive increased demand for value-added materials to enhance shelf life or product protection. Technological advances such as breathable films and films that enable steam cooking, as well as manufacturers' requirements for higher performance packaging with enhanced graphics capabilities, will also support growth.
Stand-up, flat pouches to be fastest growing product
Fastest growth is anticipated for pouches as a result of solid prospects for stand-up pouches, often at the expense of rigid containers. Opportunities for stand-up pouches will be based on advantages of excellent visual appeal, product differentiation, convenience, portability and reclosability. Healthy gains are also expected for flat pouches due to improved barrier structures and the incorporation of such convenience features as resealable zippers, spouts and tear notches. Selfventing film structures enabling microwave steam cooking of vegetables in pouches will reinvigorate frozen vegetable applications. Bags and other types of converted flexible packaging will post more moderate growth, although aboveaverage opportunities will exist in produce, beverages, meat and related products, frozen food, pharmaceuticals and medical products.
Food packaging to offer best market opportunities
Growth in food applications will slightly outpace the overall market as a result of increased demand for convenienceoriented and other processed food items, many of which require improved barrier capability for longer shelf life. Favorable demographics and a steady stream of new product introductions of foods in singleportion sizes for portability or to limit serving sizes will also favorably impact related packaging demand. Fastest gains are anticipated for meat and related products, produce and frozen food applications. Growth in meat and produce markets will result from rising demand for convenience-oriented products that require value-added packaging materials for extended shelf life. Above-average prospects in the frozen food market will be fueled by product and packaging innovations enhancing the quality and convenience of frozen foods. Among nonfood markets, fastest growth is anticipated in the pharmaceutical and medical product markets based on heightened barrier requirements, cost and convenience advantages, and adaptability to growing unit dose requirements.
Polypropylene film to log most rapid material gains
While polyethylene will remain by far the leading film type, polypropylene is expected to log faster gains based on its combination of cost, lightweighting and performance attributes. Among other film types, ethylene vinyl alcohol and polyester films will log above-average growth as a result of higher barrier requirements in food packaging. Though efforts to increase packaging sustainability will boost opportunities for degradable films, performance limitations will restrict usage to niche applications. Despite slower advances for paper and foil, continued opportunities will exist in laminations or uses where paper and foil meet specific performance and aesthetic needs.
Moreover, paper's good environmental profile will be advantageous as interest in sustainable packaging increases.
