Performance apparel markets: product developments and innovations

USA-based 3M has introduced Thinsulate Supreme Insulation with X-Static, a thermal insulation material which features antimicrobial odour control. The material forms part of the company's Thinsulate Supreme Insulation range.

Thinsulate Supreme Insulation materials provide a high level of thermal insulation, and the fibres from which they are made feature a special coating that provides a soft silky and luxurious feel. The new material incorporates X-Static fibres, which are produced by USA-based Noble Biomaterials. These fibres have a layer of pure silver permanently bonded to their surface which provides antimicrobial and anti-odour properties. The material is designed for use in a variety of garments including activewear, casual clothing, hunting apparel, and heavy duty workwear.

Commenting on the new material, the marketing manager for the Thinsulate Insulation brand, Paul Maturen, said: ""Thinsulate Supreme Insulation with X-Static Silver Fibers was developed to provide users with exceptional warmth, comfort and the luxurious feel they've come to expect, along with a unique odour control technology, that together answer the need in outerwear for highly active people, or in pieces that tend not to get cleaned or washed regularly.""

Thinsulate Supreme Insulation with X-Static will be featured in a new range of apparel by USA-based Spyder Active Sports, a specialist in ski wear, for the autumn/winter 2009/10 season.
