Summary
Polyester Chain Report: 2008 contains 150 pages packed with up-to-date statistics and objective analysis of the trends and recent development of the polyester Industry covering the entire value chain beginning from ethylene further to intermediate – PTA & MEG, down to polyester fibre and filaments. The Report presents tabulation and graphical presentation of trends in demand and supply of polyester chain country-wise from 2003 to 2007 and projec-tions upto 2013 for both fibre and filament. Processes description, end use and derivatives along with the latest producer-wise capacity are added feature of this report.
Highlights
"The polyester staple fibre industry witnessed strong growth in 2007 with both capacity and consumption surging double digits. Such a performance was last seen in 1999 and 2004. Dur-ing the year, capacity expanded 10% while output and consumption increased 12%. About 1.5 million tons of net capacity was added during the year, with Asia alone accounting for 1.4 million tons. China’s PSF capacity increased 22% to or by 1.7 million tons to 9.7 million tons and Japan added 0.5 million tons.
Corroborating the capacity expansion, production grew 12% in 2007 to 12.7 million tons in 2007. PSF production in Asia increased significantly by 16% taking the total to 14.7 million tons. It now accounts for 85% of global PSF supplies. The growth was led by almost all the major PSF producing Asian countries excepting Taiwan.
Polyester filament yarn consumption reached 19 million tons increasing 14% in 2007. Of this, Asia alone consumed 15.8 million tons. Outside Asia, prominent consuming regions were Middle East and West Europe. They together consumed 8% of global supplies with volumes at 0.85 million tons and 0.72 million tons respectively. Americas including south and Central, together consumed 6% or 1.1 million tons of PFY."
