Summary

The "World Nylon - Trends in Demand and Supply" is the Fourth compendium from YarnsandFibers presenting the demand and supply trends in manmade fiber industry. Time series on trends from 1990 to 2007 on production, imports, exports and apparent consumption is presented country-wise for 13 countries including all major Asian countries, USA and West Europe.

In this Report we have assesses the impact of the expiry of the MFA and ATC and the scenario post-WTO in global manmade fibre/filament industry and natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country prepared and positioned itself in the global market. The analysis assesses the positions of fi-bres/filaments industry and their producers and consumers as events unfolded. Like in case of MFA, the period under consideration is pre-1995, for ATC it is 1995 to 2004 and post-WTO it is 2005 to 2007.

The purpose of this compendium is to serve as a basic information infrastructure for textile companies and to all those who are related to fibres and yarns industry. The compendium will also serve as a ready to use reference and the presentation help easy and quick consumption of the information.

China, USA and Taiwan were the top three nylon producing countries in 2007 accounting for almost 70% of global supplies. China is the leader in nylon accounting for about 25% of global capacity and 30% of total production. In 1995, China accounted for only 9% of global nylon supply which expanded over three-fold in 2007. It has recorded a growth of nearly 12% per annum since 1995, the ATC period.

USA, the second largest producer of nylon, although accounts for 34% of global nylon capacity, even higher than China, had only 29% share in global supplies, a bit lower than China. Unlike China, it has recorded 1% decline per annum since 1990 with growth rate falling to -6% during the first two years of WTO.

The third largest nylon supplier, Taiwan accounted for 5% of global capacity in 2007 but shared 12% of global supplies. It recorded a 6% per annum growth rate in production during the ATC period (1995-2004) only to decline 3.6% annually between 2005 and 2007.

Besides these three countries, the other major ones were South Korea and Germany.

Among consumers, China, USA and Taiwan were major followed by Germany and Russia.
