Summary
This is BSG's annual report summarising developments related to exhibition venues in Asia. The report features detailed tables organized by country outlining each venue's location, size, year of establishment, number of halls as well as any expansion plans through 2010. In total over 160 venues are profiled.
China dominates the region home to 85 of the 162 venues in Asia - or over 52% of the total. Japan, India and Korea each have 12 venues. Thailand and Australia both have seven venues and all other countries have less than five venues. (See Table 1 for details.)
In terms of total gross square metres, China boasts 3,527,789 m2 which accounts for 65% of the available space in Asia. The next largest market, Japan (350,606 m2), has roughly one tenth the space available China. India ranks third with 257,457 m2 of available space. The only other markets with more than 200,000 m2 are Korea, Thailand and Singapore. (See Table 1 for details.)
Table 3 ranks the top ten largest venues in Asia measured by total gross indoor size. Eight of the ten are 100,000 m2 or more and seven of the ten are located in China. The Pazhou Complex in Guangzhou features an amazing 338,000 m2 of exhibition space - just less than double the second largest venue, the Liuhua Complex also at the Chinese Export Commodities Fair Ground. Thailand's IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Centre with 137,000 m2 ranks third. The other two venues in the top ten outside of China are the Singapore Expo and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. (See Table 3 for details.)
BSG expects the exhibition space available in Asia to grow by 6.7% between 2008 and the end of 2010. During that period, Singapore will grow the fastest (25%) adding 41,000 m2 of space with the opening of the Marina Bay Sands. The opening of Singapore's first integrated resort will increase total space in Singapore from 162,600 m2 to 203,600 m2. By 2010, Korea will increase its size by 23% as the 41,770 m2 New Songdo City venue comes online this year. Hong Kong's available space has been increased by 15% as the 19,400 m2 expansion of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre was recently completed. BSG anticipates that the largest market, China will continue to expand at an impressive rate (7.2%) adding more than 250,000 m2.
