The global music industry includes a large number of independent artists who offer varying forms of music. With the global market largely controlled by five major labels namely-Universal, EMI, Sony, Warner and BMG, the record companies enjoy a command over the pool of artists.The global music industry revenues dipped in 2005 with overall album sales recording the lowest levels since 1996. US CD sales fell by x% compared to the previous year, primarily attributed to piracy. However, overall music sales in the US, which include CDs, music videos as well as ringtones, increased xx% to more than 1 billion units. Europe's music industry witnessed growth in digital music sales during 2005. In Japan, on the other hand, audio sales (excluding music videos and music DVDs) dropped xx% in 2005 in retail value
