Summary
Tourism Overview Reports indicate that Egypt recorded robust growth in the tourism sector in the first four months of 2007, with very strong growth in arrivals from European source markets during the Easter break. This also coincided with a stronger than expected increase in international tourist arrivals to the Middle East as a whole. Based on this evidence, BMI has raised its growth forecast for foreign visitor arrivals to Egypt in 2007 to around 7% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 9.7mn (following favourable growth of 5.5% y-o-y in 2006).
BMI, however, expects growth in arrivals to slow slightly next year. By 2011, we predict that Egypt will be attracting over 11mn visitors per annum.
Bird Flu Update Since our last report, a further person has died from the H5N1 bird flu virus and the number of cases of human infection have increased slightly in Egypt. This brings the total number of human deaths from bird flu in the country to 15 out of a total of 37 known human infections - the largest number outside of Asia.
