Perrigo was founded in 1887. By the 1920s the company had expanded into producing private labels for customers, and in the 1930s it moved into manufacturing. Recent years have seen a concerted move into the US generic drug market.

Perrigo has manufacturing facilities in Michigan and South Carolina, and has subsidiaries in Mexico. The company is currently restructuring its US operations, with two plants in Michigan divested during the second quarter of fiscal 2007.

The company currently markets around 1,200 store brand products to around 300 customers. The largest is Wal Mart, which accounted for 21% of sales in 2007. Perrigo is the largest manufacturer of store brand OTCs and nutritional products in the United States.

In fiscal 2007, Perrigo reported net sales of US$1,447.4 million, compared to US$1,366.8 million the previous year. Sales have been boosted due to Perrigo's March 2005 acquisition of Agis Industries, a major Israeli drug manufacturer.

In January 2008, Perrigo acquired the UK's Galpharm Healthcare for US$86 million. The firm was a leading supplier of OTC store brand pharmaceuticals sold by supermarkets, drug stores and pharmacies in the UK.
