Toshiba Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a global company engaged in the production, manufacture and sale of electronic and high-technology energy products. Its medical device operations, the focus of this profile, are conducted by Toshiba Medical Systems, a leading manufacturer and marketer of diagnostic medical imaging systems such as computed tomography (CT), X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear imaging products, as well as healthcare information systems.

The company offers different product lines in different geographic regions, although its key CT, X-ray, ultrasound and MRI products are sold worldwide. The company mainly sells its healthcare information systems and nuclear imaging systems in Japan, with the latter offered by Toshiba through a distribution alliance with Siemens. Other alliances that have broadened the company's portfolio include one with Vital Images, under which Toshiba offers the Vitrea 2 workstation and software that creates 2D, 3D and 4D images of human anatomy and the companies have co-developed SUREPlaque coronary plaque characterisation software for CT. In addition, Toshiba enjoys a growing relationship with McKesson, whereby it offers certain of McKesson's PACS products and the companies have recently co-developed Ultrasound Multiview Off-line Review Workstation software which loads 4D data acquired from Toshiba's Aplio XG and Xario XG ultrasound systems into a McKesson PACS.

Toshiba Medical Systems has a sales network of local corporations and representatives in more than 120 countries. The company's medical systems are manufactured mainly in Tochigi, Japan, as well as at one location in China. The remainder of its international activities are limited to the sale, installation, repair and maintenance of medical devices. The company has recently enhanced its global operations with the establishment of an R&D centre in the US and a new sales subsidiary in China.

Toshiba Medical Systems is included in Toshiba's Social Infrastructure unit which also incorporates the company's Power Systems, Social Infrastructure Systems, Industrial Systems, IT Solutions and Toshiba Elevator businesses.
