The hospital system in China follows a three tier system (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary) according to the level of services required by patients. Treatment of minor ailments and community service is provided by primary hospitals. Patients are referred to secondary or tertiary hospitals depending on the seriousness.

Although, the major investment in the healthcare industry in China is made by the private sector, the public sector plays a major role in providing healthcare services. Those urban employees who are covered under the government-operated basic medical insurance systems are provided with medical facilities at a low cost. In addition, the rural population is also provided with voluntary health insurance through Central Government's rural co-operative medical system.
