Summary
Finland's medical market is highly developed and mature. Following a recession in the 1990s, the Finnish economy is set to continue the steady growth that picked up in the late 1990's. The Finnish population enjoys a very high standard of healthcare and maintaining this is a political priority.
Despite a strong domestic industry, the medical device market is reliant upon imported goods to fulfil a large part of demand. Both imports and exports exhibited significant growth in 2005. Although overall market growth is sluggish, certain niche markets are expected to grow rapidly; such as telemedicine, which is well suited to Finland's remote rural regions. The Finnish market for medical devices is predicted to increase by 7.3% per annum at constant prices to attain a value of US$1,002.4 million by 2012.
The import of medical devices to Finland increased by 77.8% between 2002 and 2006 to reach US$667.7 million in 2006. Between 2001 and 2005, domestic production increased by 11.0% (31.2% in US dollar terms), amounting to 528.4 million euros (US$777.1 million) in 2005. In 2006, Finland exported US$1,062.1 million of medical devices, of which 64.2% was as medical equipment. As a result of these trade figures, Finland is one of only a few countries to have a positive trade balance.
Finland's domestic device manufacturing industry, comprising mainly small and specialised companies, has overall performed relatively well over the last few years as rising exports attest. Instrumentarium, Finland's largest device company by far, was de-listed from the Helsinki stock exchange when it was bought by General Electric in 2002 and is now integrated into the GE Medical Systems division.
