Tanzania Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report Q2 2013
BMI View: The discovery and subsequent suspension of counterfeit antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) produced by the country's first local manufacturer of ARVs highlights the ongoing lack of regulations and drug control mechanisms in place in Tanzania. The country is a market heavily reliant on imports, which bear the greatest risk of counterfeit medication. Combined with the discovery of a production facility producing fake drugs, this has led BMI to believe the road to the availability of quality medicines to address the high burden of HIV and other diseases will be a long one.
