Summary

This Health Industry Insights report presents the results of our 2008 survey of chief medical officers (CMOs) or their direct reports regarding care navigation and care management strategies. This document examines key care management initiatives, IT spending priorities to support them, and what is driving/impeding them.

"The costs associated with treating chronic conditions are staggering and burdening healthcare systems worldwide. In the United States, treating chronic conditions accounts for more than 75% of the nation's $2.3 trillion health expenditure. Not surprisingly, reducing medical and pharmaceutical costs, along with improving the quality of patient care and outcomes, continues to be among the top drivers for care management initiatives. As a nation in the face of a worsening economy and significant budget constraints experienced by all stakeholders, we can no longer afford to reimburse for healthcare that is not effective, and we must find ways to engage consumers in health and wellness programs, especially preventative care," states Lynne A. Dunbrack, program director, Health Industry Insights.
