Summary

This IDC study provides the reader with an overview of the IT spending trends by the pharmaceutical sector in India. It also provides insights into their important industry dynamics and opportunities, the trends shaping up in the vertical, emerging business challenges and issues, and the role that IT is playing in exploiting these opportunities and meeting these challenges. Along with this, the report also provides insights into component-wise IT spending patterns for the major product categories in the vertical for the year 2006 as well as a forecast of the same on a yearly basis until 2011.

"The total IT spending by the pharmaceutical sector in India was estimated to be US$222.2 million in 2006 and this is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.8% for the forecast period to reach US$443.4 million by 2011. The major contribution of the India pharmaceutical IT market comes from hardware products, which are forecast to increase at a CAGR of 13.5%, increasing from US$134.3 million in 2006 to US$253.2 million in 2011. However, the major growth drivers in the vertical are going to be the software and services markets that are forecast to increase at a CAGR of 25.3% and 23.1%, respectively, for the forecast period, 2006-2011. Business and regulatory needs like networking, integration, data warehousing (DW), sales force automation (SFA), regulatory compliance, and supply chain/distribution management are going to be the major drivers of increasing IT spend for the pharmaceutical vertical in the years ahead,"says Arpan Gupta, assistant manager, Verticals Research, IDC India.
