This Health Industry Insights Perspective discusses the results of several recent surveys of hospital CIOs conducted by Health Industry Insights in February, May, and September 2008 and compares those findings with the annual survey on the status of regional health information organizations (RHIOs) in the United States conducted by the eHealth Initiative (eHI) and the trend seen in similar data from the HIMSS Leadership Surveys from 2006 to 2008. Finally, it postulates what these results suggest about the future of local, state-level, and national electronic health information exchange (HIE) activities.
