Summary
Headquartered in Raynham, Massachusetts and Warsaw, Indiana, in the US, Johnson & Johnson's DePuy franchise is one of the world's leading orthopaedic companies and the oldest manufacturer of orthopaedic implants in the US. DePuy's products are primarily used by orthopaedic specialists and spinal neurosurgeons to treat patients with musculoskeletal conditions resulting from degenerative diseases, deformities, trauma and sports-related injuries.
DePuy consists of the following companies:
- DePuy Orthopaedics - a leading manufacturer of orthopaedic devices, including hip, knee and extremity replacements, bone cement, trauma, orthobiologics and operating room products. DePuy Orthopaedics is based in DePuy's headquarters in Warsaw and in Leeds in the UK. The company includes the Trauma & Extremities Group, which offers reconstructive extremity products and the trauma products previously marketed by the former DePuy ACE business.
- DePuy Spine - manufactures implants and technologies for the treatment of cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral spinal pathologies. DePuy Spine is headquartered in Raynham, Massachusetts in the US and Leeds in the UK. The company was called DePuy AcroMed until October 2003.
- DePuy Mitek - a manufacturer of devices for surgery, focusing on sports medicine and reconstruction, including suture anchoring implants for tissue reattachment. The company includes Future Medical Systems, a French company that offers arthroscopic fluid management systems, acquired in 2006. DePuy Mitek has its headquarters in Raynham, Massachusetts.
- Codman & Shurtleff (Codman) - also headquartered in Raynham, Massachusetts. Provides products for the surgical treatment of central nervous system disorders, including hydrocephalic shunt valve systems. The company also offers surgical instruments and Synergetics USA's bipolar electrosurgical systems. In January 2009, Cordis' Neurovascular division, which supplied products for the neurovascular management of strokes, became a business unit of Codman & Shurtleff. The integration of this business - to form Codman Neurovascular - has created the platform for a global neuroscience device company.
Three strategic acquisitions in 2006 broadened DePuy's leadership in orthodpaedics. Hand Innovations added fracture fixation products for the upper extremities, while Future Medical Systems provided arthroscopic fluid management systems and positions DePuy at the forefront of minimally-invasive techniques in sports medicine. In addition, OrthoMedics, a South African distributor, expanded the company's presence in that region.
In 2007, DePuy acquired assets related to the treatment of vertebral compression fractures from Disc-O-Tech Medical Technologies. The assets included the Confidence System, which consists of a proprietary delivery system and polymethylmethacrylate bone cement that can be injected directly into vertebral bodies to treat compression fractures.
In addition to growth through acquisitions, DePuy has benefitted from the launch of key new products. Recent examples include Codman entering into the programmable implantable drug pump market in Europe with the introduction of the Medstream Programmable Infusion System, the first new pump technology for chronic intractable pain and spasticity in 20 years. DePuy Orthopaedics launched new joint-replacement products that included Tri-Lock Bone Preservation Stem, a bone-preserving hip stem with proprietary Gription technology for stability, and enhancements to the Sigma knee system.
DePuy forms part of Johnson & Johnson's Surgical Care Group, which focuses on technologies and services to enhance patient care in the surgical setting. In addition to DePuy the Group includes Ethicon, Mentor and Ethicon Endo-Surgery.
DePuy is Johnson & Johnson's largest franchise within its Medical Devices and Diagnostics business, generating sales of almost US$5.0 billion in 2008 and with a global workforce of 5,300. It has manufacturing facilities in Indiana, Massachusetts, California and Florida in the US, as well as factories in Ireland, Switzerland, the UK, Germany and China.
