Ohio, US-based Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc (EES) develops and markets advanced medical devices for minimally-invasive and open surgical procedures. The company focuses on procedure-enabling devices for the interventional diagnosis and treatment of conditions in general and bariatric surgery, as well as gastro-intestinal health, gynaecology and surgical oncology. Products include the Endopath XCEL Access System; Contour Curved Cutter Stapler; Harmonic ultrasonic cutting and coagulation surgical devices; and the Mammotome Biopsy System for the diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. In October 2008, EES acquired SurgRx, which developed a proprietary next-generation sealing/cutting product called EnSeal.

EES has manufacturing sites in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the US and in Mexico. It also has sales and distribution offices in more than 50 countries. The company also operates the Endo-Surgery Institute, an educational facility in Cincinnati, as well as additional training centres in Germany and Japan.

EES generated sales of almost US$4.3 billion in 2008. The company forms part of Johnson & Johnson's Surgical Care Group, which focuses on technologies and services to enhance patient care in the surgical setting. In addition to EES, the Surgical Care Group includes Ethicon, Mentor and DePuy.
