Hitachi Medical sells medical systems in Japan, North America, Europe, Asia and other regions. Japan accounted for 61% of total sales in fiscal 2009 (year ended 31st March, 2009). The European market is the company's principal international market, accounting for approximately 43% of overseas sales in fiscal 2009.

Traditionally, Hitachi Medical has focused on sales of MRI systems to North America but, in the light of weakened demand for such equipment in that market as a result of the current global economic downturn, the company is now ramping up sales of MRI systems in Europe and Japan. Europe continues to be a major market for the company's ultrasound systems.

Hitachi Medical is currently implementing a performance restructuring programme, aimed to growing its medical equipment business wherever possible, despite the grim economic environment. Key goals include: expanding sales by developing distinctive products aimed at customers in the volume zone; enhancing the structure of the business through product quality improvements and increased productivity; accelerating the development of next-generation products; and, building a new business model that better reflects the state of the global market.
