The population of Slovenia is estimated at 2.0 million in 2008 and it is slowly ageing; 16.5% of Slovenians are currently aged 65, compared to 14.1% in 2000. Slovenia is one of the richest CEE countries and successfully joined the EU in May 2004. It became the first new member state to adopt the Euro in January 2007.

Three months prior to EU entry, the MoH replaced the Office for Medicinal Products with the Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices. This is the competent authority responsible for regulating medical devices. The relevant legislation has been harmonised with EU directives.

Funding for healthcare in Slovenia is primarily through compulsory health insurance. The system was introduced in 1992 and is managed by the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia. Those insured are entitled to free health services, sick pay and reimbursement of travel expenses linked to obtaining health services.
