Summary
Includes 3 quarterly updated outlook reports!
The population of Slovenia is estimated at 2.0 million in 2008 and it is slowly ageing; 16.5% of Slovenians are currently aged 65, compared to 14.1% in 2000. Slovenia is one of the richest CEE countries and successfully joined the EU in May 2004. It became the first new member state to adopt the Euro in January 2007.
Three months prior to EU entry, the MoH replaced the Office for Medicinal Products with the Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices. This is the competent authority responsible for regulating medical devices. The relevant legislation has been harmonised with EU directives.
Funding for healthcare in Slovenia is primarily through compulsory health insurance. The system was introduced in 1992 and is managed by the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia. Sources of income for the fund include employers and employees, farmers, the pension fund and the state budget. Those insured are entitled to free health services, sick pay and reimbursement of travel expenses linked to obtaining health services.
In 2008, the Slovenian market for medical equipment and supplies is estimated at US$387 million, or US$192 per capita, which is very high for the region. The device market is expected to continue expanding at a rate of 10.0% per annum, reaching US$619 million, or US$311 per capita by 2013.
Around 60% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Germany and Italy were the leading suppliers in 2006, accounting for almost 40% of imports. The value of imports increased by a CAGR of 21.7% over 2002-2006.
