Summary
The sales scale of anti-fungals in Chinese hospitals has increased stably since 1999. And in 2004, the growth rate of anti-fungals reached as high as 31.16% and the sales value reached RMB 2.172 billion. Fungal infection is generally divided into anti-fungal for superficial infection and anti-fungal for invasive infection, accounting for over 60% share and in recent years the share is nearly 70%. The share of the TOP 5 brands in 2001 was 85.68% and that of TOP 5 brands in 2004 was 89.29%, which indicates the high market concentration of anti-fungal drugs. During 2001 and 2004, fluconazole, itraconazole and terbinafine were in the first three places.
Among the TOP 20 manufacturers in market share in 2004, 9 are foreign enterprises and joint ventures and 11 are Chinese enterprises. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Limited (Pfizer) is always taking the lead and its share is rising increasingly. In 2004, its share was 38.1%, followed by Janssen Pharmaceutical (Xi'an) Ltd (Xi'an Janseen) and Novartis. In view of geographical distribution of the 16 major cities in 2004, the TOP 4 cities are economic developed and populous cities, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou, which take up for 56.87% of the total share of the 16major cities.
