Summary
The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Apart from protecting and providing sensation, it performs important functions such as heat regulation and excretion. Skin is the body's first line of defense against a hostile environment, being waterproof from both directions and germ-proof.
There are about two square meters of skin covering an average adult and it accounts for about an eighth of the total body weight. Apart from clinical diagnosis, there are few methods for diagnosing skin disorders. Treatment options include combinations of prescription drugs, surgery, phototherapy, chemical peels, cryotherapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and others.
This BCC Research report offers a comprehensive picture of trends in the global dermatological therapeutics industry through 2007, and makes market projections over a 5-year period, from 2008 to the end of 2013. It covers five categories of prescriptions drugs including anti-infective, anti-acne, anti-psoriasis, corticosteroid and other dermatological drugs, which includes topical treatments.
The impact of the governmental regulatory environment is examined in detail. Established market segments are analyzed by skin disorder and type of treatment. Emerging technologies in permeation enhancement, in plasma skin regeneration, and in treatment of various disorders such as dermatitis, acne and radiotherapy are discussed. Analysis of industry structure is also included.
The scope of this report is broad and includes:
- Descriptions of the major types of skin disorders including acne, bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic, cancerous, cornification, bullous, dermatitis-related, psoriasis-related, hypersensitivity-related, pigmentation-related, sweating-related and many others
- The current global market status for dermatological therapeutics, with trends and forecasts for growth over the next 5 years
- Discussion of various types of skin cancer, including types of melanoma, and available treatments
- Analysis of common diagnostic procedures including dermoscopy, patch testing, skin biopsy, cultures and phototests
- Company profiles
