Summary

Wound healing involves a series of integrated physiological processes. The nature of healing is the same for all wounds, with variations depending on the location, severity and extent of injury. Advanced wound care technology has become a significant part of the wound care products market. Advanced wound care deals with those products involving new techniques and therapies, including biotechnological advancements.

This BCC research report analyzes the global market for advanced wound care technology through 2007, and makes market projections over a 5-year period, from 2008 to the end of 2013. Three general areas are discussed in this report: acute wounds, chronic wounds and burn wounds. These encompass five market segments: biological dressings, surgical sealants and glues, synthetic dressings, other wound healing products and wound healing devices. Stages of wound healing and both conventional and advanced treatments are presented and discussed.

The report provides a detailed discussion of factors influencing the advanced wound care market such as the growing percentage of adults over the age of 55, governmental regulations and technological advances made possible by stem cell and other research. The advanced wound care technology industry is examined by geographic region and product type. Profiles of major companies in the U.S. and worldwide also are included.

The scope of this report is broad and includes:

  • Descriptions of trends influencing the market such as insurance reimbursement issues, military wound care, alternative wound care and directions for future research
  • The current global market status for advanced wound care technologies, with trends and forecasts for growth over the next 5 years
  • Discussion of factors affecting wound healing such as age, nutritional status, and obesity
  • Overview of government funded research related to advanced wound care technology
  • Company profiles.

Report Highlights:

  • The global market for advanced wound care will increase from $3.0 billion in 2007 to an estimated $3.5 billion by the end of 2008. It should reach $6.0 billion in 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.3%.
  • Wound care dressings, sealants and anti-adhesion products have the largest share of the market, worth $1.7 billion in 2007. This is expected to increase to $1.8 billion in 2008 and nearly $3.0 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 9.2%.
  • Wound healing devices have the second largest market share, generating $1.3 billion in 2007 and an estimated $1.6 billion in 2008. This should increase at a CAGR of 13.4% to reach $3.0 billion in 2013.
