Confectioners Spooked by Prospect of Sugar-free Candy

Report Buyer has added a new report which finds that healthier non-chocolates are selling like wildfire, particularly those claiming to have dietary benefits. It says sugar-free chocolates have surged in sales in the U.S. In 2006, for instance, sales shot up by 7% from the previous year. Children certainly seem to taken to the new products – since the report maintains that 89% of American children consume non-chocolate candy. U.S. Market for Non-Chocolate Candy also predicts that customer-preference for healthier candy is here to stay.

When the neighbourhood children come trick or treating, remember to have some healthy sugar-free candy around to hand out to them.

With British Secretary Alan Johnson saying recently that the obesity epidemic could become a crisis as serious as climate change, it’s time to pick something from the ‘health conscious’ candy lines rapidly gaining ground in the markets. There’s certainly plenty to choose from; sugar-free, fruit flavoured, nut-enriched, chewy non-chocolate or even diet-candy. Oh yes – do ensure that you’re handing out single-serve packets, which make portion control easier.

Candy may have long been seen as the enemy of teeth and promoter of chubbiness. Not any more. This is the age of the candiceutical, which could otherwise be called the non-sugar- coated-bitter- pill. It’s also the age of getting your daily dose of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids from, don’t hold your breath, candy! The fast growing problem of obesity and rising health concerns have made U.S chocolate manufacturers more inventive in marketing healthier non-chocolate candy. So the latest buzzwords in the industry are organic, functional and fortified, all applying to New Age candy.

So go on and get some of that healthy candy, it’s time to do your part this hallowe’en.
