New Report says Despite Long Waiting Lists for Organ Transplants, Market for Immunosuppressives Will Grow at 5% to 2013

Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has added a new report which predicts that despite the shortage of organ donors and long waiting lists, the immunosuppressives market it set to grow at 5% to 2013.

Organ Transplant Immunosuppressive Markets finds that there is a large-scale shortage of organ donors which is impacting the transplant medicine markets. It stresses that that solving the donor shortage would lead to exponential growth in transplant medicine markets.

The report finds that although over $5 billion worth of immunosuppressants were sold in 2007, there is a large and growing ‘treatment gap’ between the number of patients across the world who would benefit from an organ transplant and the number of organs available.

The report finds that in the US, over 97,000 patients were on the United Network for Organ Sharing’s list, while just 28,000 received a transplant. Other countries
show similar gaps. The study finds that the gap was first evident in 1998 and has increased every year since.

Authors of the report say that while the pharmaceutical industry has created effective medication, but that challenges remain in the public policy arena. They find that awareness of the need for organ donation must be increased for the demand to be completely served.

The study says immunosuppressives, which are drugs that prevent the immune system from rejecting a new organ, have proved to be highly efficacious. The publication finds that drugs such as Astella’s Prograf and Roche’s CellCept have reduced incidence of acute organ rejection and made transplantation a viable option in more cases. This has also increased organ waiting lists.

The growth in the immunosuppresives market will be due to a small increase in transplant operations and increased survival rates of patients who will require treatment for a longer period.
