U.S. Teen Market for Wireless Subscriptions is Near Saturation

Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has added a new report which finds that wireless penetration rates for teens is reaching saturation, resulting in stagnating growth.

Targeting the Wireless Teen – The 12-17 US Teen Wireless Subscribers, Revenue, ARPU and Content, reports that since the teen market is not a multiple handset demographic, subscriber growth is forced to slow.

Interestingly, the study finds that by age 17, the vast majority of teens have wireless services, with more teenage girls having phones than boys.

The report states that the teen market is an especially appealing market for two reasons. First, it is a primary source of new subscribers for carriers. Additionally, it is found that teens teach older demographics how to use their handsets.

Authors of the report say that studies indicate that teens often teach their parents how to use value-added services, adding to ARPU (Average Revenue per User) of older demographics.

The study says the US 12-17 teen cellular subscribers surpassed 16 million in 2007. This figure represents a 12% leap from 2006. It predicts that by 2012, the number of teen subscribers will reach 17 million, a delta of only 1 million subscribers from 2007.
