Summary

BMI's report on mobile telecommunications in Emerging Europe covers eight markets, almost all of which have seen mobile penetration pass the 100% mark within the last 24 months. The markets examined in this report are Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine.

In addition to forecasting subscriber growth in the mobile markets of all these countries and for the region as a whole, the report looks in particular at opportunities for growth in the 3G mobile telephony industry. The report studies the 3G climates for all eight markets and profiles operators that either already hold a 3G licence or are likely to win licences over the coming years. Our forecast period is for five years until the end of 2012. Most of our 2007 figures are actual, but some are still estimates.

In general, we have used operator definitions of 3G subscribers. In most cases the market size figures will relate to those consumers who are in possession of a 3G-compatible handset. This does not necessarily mean that each of these 3G subscribers is regularly using the 3G network for data transmissions. Two primary 3G technologies are in use in Emerging Europe. W-CDMA technology predominates, as it is used as the next step on from legacy GSM networks, but it is increasingly being augmented by so-called 3.5G and 3.75G technologies such as EDGE and HSDPA. The second technology is CDMA 2000, which has been deployed more sporadically but is being used to upgrade older low-capacity analogue and limited mobility networks in countries such as Russia and Romania at a fraction of the cost of deploying its more advanced cousin.
