Summary
BMI's report on mobile telephony in Asia covers 10 markets, broadly split into advanced and developing markets. The five advanced markets are Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. The developing markets comprise China, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Pakistan.
As well as forecasting subscriber growth in the mobile markets of all these countries and the region as a whole, the report looks in particular at opportunities for growth in the 3G cellular industry. The report studies the 3G climates for all 10 markets and profiles operators that either already hold a 3G licence, or are likely to win licences over the coming years. Our forecast period is for five years until the end of 2012. Most of our 2007 figures are actual, but some are still estimates.
On the whole, we have used operator definitions of 3G subscribers. In most cases, the market size figures will relate to those consumers who are in possession of a 3G-compatible handset. This does not necessarily mean that each of these 3G subscribers is regularly using the 3G network for data transmissions. Broadly speaking there are two primary 3G technologies: W-CDMA (for original GMS networks), prevalent throughout Europe and increasingly enhanced by HSDPA; and CDMA 2000 (for original CDMA networks), more commonly in use across the US. A third standard TD-SCDMA has been developed by China, and is awaiting launch once the country awards its 3G licences.
