Summary
Once the radio world was flush with rival radio technologies, many of them proprietary. Since the success of cellular radio and in particular the success of the European GSM digital standard, all that has changed. When it comes to radio access cellular has become dominant. Until now, perhaps.
Asia is leading the way in the roll out of a new alternative. WiMAX, which stands for World Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a radio technology optimized to support broadband data access networks as required, for example, for "last mile" access to the Internet from homes or offices. It currently supports data rates of up to 75Mbit/s (in practice rates are around 10Mbit/s). The long term goal is to achieve data rates of up to 1Gbit/s.
As well as home and office access, other applications of WiMAX include disaster backup either for private or public networks, providing Internet access to nomadic users, connecting WiFi hotspots and providing a low cost alternative to point-to-point microwave or leased lines for the backhaul portion of cellular networks.
There are a number of reasons why Asia has taken a lead in WiMAX. One is the well-established culture in broadband use across South Korea and Japan, especially aggressive promotion of this technology in South Korea. Another is that WiMAX addresses Asia's need to cover vast distances and diversity of terrains. And another is that the development of cable based fixed network infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the growth of economies in the region.
We believe Asia will account for over half the world's WiMAX subscriber count with some 38mn subscriptions in the region by the end of 2012.
