The Australian broadband market, and the Australian telecommunications market as a whole, is heading for a crunch period shortly after 2007 if operators and ISPs do not act now to generate higher usage and growth. By that time, broadband revenue growth will be dropping, and will cease to compensate for the ongoing loss of PSTN revenues. This scenario presents a big challenge to everyone in the marketplace. If new uses of broadband are slow to materialise, then price cutting designed to boost connections may be the only short-term alternative. Ideally, this should be accompanied by operator consolidation and renewed cost-cutting to generate further scale and profitability while innovation on new service packages proceeds.
