Summary

AOL has found its US business in an increasingly unsustainable position over recent years. Unable to provide high-speed access on an economically viable basis, the company has struggled to remain competitive in its domestic market since the advent of broadband. Forced to offer dial-up access and membership to its portal on a 'bring your own access' basis, the company's US customer base has faced inexorable decline. Despite a restructuring of its operations in 2004, and a major shift in strategic focus (towards stimulating growth in revenues from advertising and value-added services) subscriber numbers continue to fall, and the decline shows little sign of slowing down.
