Yoigo again saw the highest number of net additions in the final quarter of 2008 as the operator added 0.3 percentage points (pp) to its market share over a single quarter. The company had 970,000 subscribers at the end of the year with 1mn reached in January. Its impressive growth has been at the expense of the two largest mobile operators, Telefnica's Movistar and Vodafone. Movistar's share reached its lowest level at exactly 45% and, if it continues along its current path, will see its hold on the market eroded further.
The Spanish market sees little change in terms of market position, with minor fluctuations but operators remaining in the same position in most cases. Orange firmly held its share but it has been one of the biggest losers in terms of market share over the past three years and has yet to recover. Certainly Movistar's decline is a sign of stronger competition in the market but the company will be unlikely to let its market share go without a fight and could see competition intensify further as operators battle it out for a few percentage points of market share.
Although 2008 saw slightly stronger growth than BMI had anticipated we have made minimal downward adjustments to the mobile forecasts as we believe that this growth cannot continue and 2008 was the last year of such strong growth. With 119% penetration, Spain's market is clearly beyond maturity and we now expect it to finish 2013 with 56.6mn connections. However, growth will remain strong in the market through 3G connections - which expanded by 82% in 2008 and will continue to report strong growth rates moving forward. BMI anticipates 3G subscribers will account for around 36% of the mobile market in 2013, with more than 20mn customers.
3G growth will be driven by the expansion of services available from operators including mobile broadband and mobile handset applications that enable new models to access web pages like a PC.
Operators have also launched mobile TV services as well as social networking and instant messaging to encourage greater usage. BMI has extended the mobile data analysis section to include data on mobile content and services offered over 3G networks.
Owing to the expansion of our mobile data chapter fixed-line and broadband chapters have been left untouched over the quarter with a full update to be undertaken in the Q309 report. Similarly, forecasts for these two sectors remain unchanged as no new data has been added.
